Email District 2 UpdatesPublic Works - SW Hunter Road Creek Bridge Replacement![]() April 2012 The Curley Creek bridge has been completed. A video about the bridge construction including films done by students from South Colby Elementary is available here. With the completion of the Curley Creek project the next South Kitsap road project is the replacement of the Hunter Road bridge. I recently participated in a public meeting for local citizens to learn about the project. Washed out in December 2010, Hunter Road has an average daily traffic volume of 889 trips. The culverts that washed out will be replaced by a bridge over Huge Creek. More information is available here. Economic Development - Farm to Table![]() April 2012 I recently opened the Farm to Table Trade conference at the Norm Dicks Government Center. Every one of us eats, and when we purchase foods cultivated nearby, we can know the producer and how the foods were grown. The chances are that they are far fresher and more nutritious than foods that are shipped great distances to reach us. The formation of the Food Chain project in 2009 helps us understand the system of foods from farm to table – where they are grown, process and distribution methods, accessibility, and the compost that returns what is left to soils. The Kitsap Food and Farm Policy Council advises the Board of County Commissioners about this system and how to spur “Buy Local” practices. When Kitsap residents support a local food system, we stimulate our local economy! Economic Development - Transportation
March 2012
The League of Women Voters scheduled a discussion on transportation with Commissioner Garrido and members of the Washington State Ferries. In Kitsap County, ferries are a vital piece of our transportation needs; and extend state highways across Puget Sound at Bainbridge Island, Bremerton, Kingston and Southworth. As a member of the Governor’s task force on transportation, known as Connecting Washington, Commissioner Garrido was part of developing a 10-year Investment Strategy to make investments that creates and maintains an integrated system. This included investments in the ferry system that enhances economic growth.
As a charter member of Kitsap Aerospace & Defense Alliance Commissioner Garrido keeps up with issues involving business expansion and education. Along with the President of West Sound Workforce, Julie Tappero, she attended the National Flight Academy’s briefing at the Bremerton National Airport on the Science Technology Engineering & Math program given by Retired Vice Admiral Gerald Howeing. Banner Forest Banner Forest is a beautiful 635-acre public open space in the Olalla area. Commissioner Garrido negotiated the purchase of Banner Forest in 2000 following a ten year community effort to preserve this resource in its present state. The forest includes trees, ponds and wetlands. The Banner Forest Stewardship plan expresses a vision focusing on education, habitat, public use and recreational activity. When visiting Banner Forest, enjoy the natural beauty of the forest flora, fauna and wildlife and an environment that has been preserved for those seeking solitude, education and recreation.
