I have a drainage system, what am I responsible for ?

If you are a property owner or manager and your property contains some type of stormwater drainage system, you are responsible to:
   (a) manage your site to keep pollutaion from entering the system and
   (b) properly maintain the system

Stormwater System Maintenance Guidelines
Regularly maintained stormwater systems reduce flooding and water pollution.  Inspect and maintain facilities yearly. Clean debris, sediment, and vegetation as needed, especially after major storms. Use the information on this page to help determine when your system needs maintenance.

Drains or Catch Basins

  • Remove debris from grates
  • Have catch basins cleaned when:
    • the outlet pipe is covered in water even when it is not raining
    • the sediment depth i n the catch basin sump is 6"  (six inches) or more

 Oil / Water Separators

  • Clean and replace absorbent pads after each spill or by October 1 of each year.  Additional cleaning and/or replacement may be required throughout the year.
  • Have oil / water separators cleaned when:
    • oil accumulation exceeds 1/2" (one half inch) in first chamber
    • when there is any visible oil in the second chamber
    • when the sediment level reaches 6"  (six inches)

 Detention Facilities and Retention Facilities

  • Clean when the sediment exceeds 109% of the storage depth

 Bioswale

  • Clean when the vegetation or debris interferes with the flow of water
  • Keep grass 3-6" high   (three to six inches)
