Water Quality Monitoring

Water quality staff monitor stormwater runoff, stormwater best management practices performance, and storm sediments removed from the system in unincorporated Kitsap County. Stormwater runoff pollutants and flows can impact streams, lakes, wetlands and near shore areas. Typical monitoring includes sampling and testing for pollutants from our every day activities on the land, such as metals, oils, nutrients, sediments, and pathogens.

Water quality monitoring involves analyzing samples at many locations throughout watersheds to:

  • determine the current state of our streams and near shore areas
  • investigate citizen concerns -- click here to report water pollution
  • detect and eliminate pollution -- click here for common sources of pollution
  • gather information to evaluate stormwater quality treatment practices
  • determine whether clean water standards are met
  • indicate progress over time (short-term changes or long-term trends) of management actions.

The results help determine not only how well we are restoring our waterways, but also where to focus monitoring to help find and fix pollution problems.Stream Sampling

What are the goals of SSWM funded monitoring?

Stormwater impacts streams lakes, wetlands, and bays in the near shore areas. Other SSWM programs, such as maintenance, capital improvement projects, retrofit projects, and education strive to improve water quality and quantity. SSWM monitoring programs are designed to inform management, policymakers and the public on how best to spend SSWM funds to protect and restore water resources.

Watershed Health Monitoring Program – Water quality specialists are analyzing aquatic insects, fecal bacterial pollution, and water flows to assess the health of Kitsap watersheds. In addition, some monitoring work identifies and corrects pollution problems.

Stormwater Program Effectiveness Monitoring Projects -- Several local projects assess the benefits of specific stormwater management actions, and will help decide which programs to invest in the future.
