Smoke Testing in Selected Areas
Maintenance crews perform smoke tests in selected areas to check the
condition of piping and identify illicit connections of storm drains and
downspouts. The non-toxic, odorless smoke is piped into the sewer system and
then observed by maintenance staff. If you discover smoke inside your
building it means the plumbing ventilation is not working properly, and
sewer gases may be leaking into the building.
Staff works with property owners to make sure corrective actions are
made:
- If illicit connections of storm drains and/or downspouts
are observed, the property owner will be notified to correct
the problem. Treating the increased flow from rainwater
increases the cost to rate-payers county-wide.
- If a break in the service lateral is observed, the
property owner will be notified to repair the service. A
list of licensed side sewer contractors can be found
here.
