Summer Employment Program
Road Maintenance/FlaggingThe Maintenance/Flagging student employees perform a wide variety of manual labor duties in the maintenance and construction of the County roads and bridges. The work includes physical labor in performing repairs, preventative maintenance and flagging. Student employees will operate a county vehicle and miscellaneous light equipment and practice good safety habits. Job duties include:
Sign Shop MaintenanceSummer work in the Sign Shop includes striping roads with yellow and white paint, placing pavement markings, as well as replacing signs, installing new signs, and repair of flashing lights. Summer students in this section will assist full-time staff in this work as well as the following:
Surface and Storm Water Laborers & AssistantsStudent employees working in this capacity assist in the maintenance of the storm water detention and retention ponds. Students work in a team environment, primarily performing manual labor duties and operating miscellaneous power tools. Job duties include:
Education and Outreach Assistants provide support to SSWM Education/Outreach Coordinators and the Water Quality Manager. Duties may include work in both the office setting and in the field. Office duties include collating information into excel spreadsheets, data entry, copying, laminating, and filing. Field duties include marking storm drains and inspecting Mutt Mitt stations for compliance with established standards. Survey Engineering AssistantStudent employees work as a field crew member doing construction surveying, right-of-way staking, and some topographic survey. Students are also required to perform various duties in the office. Summer students also serve as aides to a survey crew performing government corner restoration.
Construction Inspection LaborerStudent employees will assist engineering construction inspectors in the inspection of major and minor road projects for drainage, grading, paving, or resurfacing to meet standards and specifications. Inspections include asphalt overlays, curb and sidewalks, sub-grade placement, storm sewer pipe, installation of box culvert. Students may be assigned to construction sites to daily work. They will also work with staff in the Pavement Management Program. Job duties include:
Engineering AssistantStudent employees will assist in design, research and documentation of roadway sections and land data. Students will become familiar with surveying data, determining horizontal and vertical alignment, structural sections, pipe sections, pipe grades and sizes and appropriate materials, etc. Work involves heavy use of computer software (AutoCAD and other programs). Job duties include:
Wastewater LaborerSummer workers will help maintain grounds at Wastewater facilities throughout the County. Work is primarily performed outside and includes cleaning and painting buildings and equipment indoors or out. Students will also assist in inspecting, testing and performing preventive maintenance at pumping stations and treatment plants. Job duties include:
Clerical AssistantAdministration clerical support provides services to all divisions of the Public Works. Job duties of the student employees working in this section may include:
