Requirements
After reading these requirements, the on-line application link is listed below.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and enrolled or accepted in a college or university program. Prior to employment, all student employees must submit a transcript and/or grade report verifying enrollment status. Students must carry a minimum class load of 12 credits per quarter or the equivalent semester hours to be considered as a student employee.

All applicants must have a valid drivers license and a good driving record.  Each student employee must maintain a valid flagging certification and first-aid certification. Public Works will provide classes each year prior to the beginning of the summer work session at our expense.  If selected for a position, student employees will not be able to begin work unless these certifications are current, no exceptions.

Summer student employees are asked to commit to work a minimum of 480 hours (or approximately 12 weeks), excluding overtime and approved time off. This is important for scheduling purposes, as Public Works has a limited time frame for the construction season. Exceptions may be made to this when a shorter work schedule fits with a supervisor's specific work needs.

Each summer, an evaluation will be completed by the student employee's supervisor to verify continuation of the student's employment. Areas in which the student will be evaluated are:

1) Ability to work without constant supervision,
2) Willingness to perform assigned tasks,
3) Punctuality and dependability,
4) Self-motivation,
5) Safety habits,
6) Ability to get along with co-workers and supervisors, and
7) Contribution to the County.

Application On-Line

Students are encouraged to apply year round.  Applications can be submitted on-line or picked up at the Public Works office, 614 Division Street, Port Orchard (in the County courthouse).  Please fill out the application completely and accurately; applications are evaluated by the information provided. Please give specific starting and ending dates. We also ask for information regarding time off needed. If this information is not provided, once employed, time off may not be granted. It is crucial for our scheduling that we have this information prior to employment.

The interview process is completed in March and assignments are made in the the first week of April.  Student employees must be available to start employment no later than the third week of June each year.

Because employment is contingent upon the ability to drive, we will be requesting a copy of your driving record obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles.
