Flood debris amnesty offered for Kitsap Residents

(Port Orchard, WA) – Kitsap County Public Works Solid Waste Division is offering free disposal of flood debris to Kitsap County residents for a limited time.

When:   Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16
             8:00 am to 5:00 pm
Where: Olympic View Transfer Station
             9300 SW Barney White Road
Olympic View Industrial Park across Hwy. 3 from
             Bremerton National Airport

What is accepted for free:  Flood-damaged carpet, furniture, mattresses, sheetrock, siding, clothing, and other personal property. Flood-damaged televisions, monitors, and appliances such as refrigerators, washers, and dryers are also accepted for free, but should be separated from other debris to allow easy unloading. Customers should be prepared to unload their own debris.

Not accepted at Olympic View Transfer Station:  Household hazardous waste (paints, garden chemicals, household cleaners, etc.) should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Facility for free disposal Thursday through Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Waste should be kept in the original container and separated from other debris. If containers are flood-damaged and material is water-logged, residents should place each container into a separate plastic bag, then place it into a sturdy, leak-proof container for transport.

Business hazardous waste is not accepted at the HHW Collection Facility without an appointment. Businesses should call The Open Line at 360-337-5777 to make an appointment.

Residents are reminded to secure their load with netting, straps, rope, chain, or bungee cord and/or tarp to prevent items from falling or blowing out. Residents must also be prepared to unload their own vehicles.

Residents unable to haul their own debris to the transfer station should contact the Department of Emergency Management at 360-307-5968.

Free disposal will not be permitted at any of the County’s Recycling and Garbage facilities.

This program is available to Kitsap County residents only; proof of residency is required. Mason County residents impacted by the flood should contact 360-427-5271 to obtain vouchers for disposal at the Shelton Transfer Station.

For further information, contact The Open Line at 360-337-5777.
