Walt Washington was sworn in on April 2, 2008 as the appointed Auditor
by the Board of County Commissioners to fill the position vacated by Karen Flynn.

Walt Washington was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to Albert and Annie Washington. He is the fourth child of seven siblings and grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada after arriving there at age five.

Walt is married to the former Mayre West of Spokane and the couple has six adult children. The Washington’s moved to an area just outside the city limits of Poulsbo where they built their home in 1999. They collectively have twelve grandchildren.

Walt came to the Seattle area with a five-year-old in tow in 1980 where he worked for Pacific Bank and First Interstate Bank until 1985. He then took on an unsuccessful business venture that ended in 1989 after which he accepted a position with the City of Seattle where he worked for ten years before accepting a subsequent position with King County.

Walt accepted a position as Chief Deputy Auditor for Karen Flynn in January 2007 before being her successor in 2008.

Walt is a decorated former Marine having served during the Vietnam era in the First Marine Air Wing, Fleet Marine Force Pacific as an intelligence and counterintelligence NCO. He was the recipient of the American Spirit Honor Medal and two meritorious service masts that included field promotions.

Walt formerly served five years in the office of National Second Vice President of Blacks in Government, a national organization dedicated to the eradication of all vestiges of racism and disparate treatment practices perpetrated on government personnel of all races, and whose goals are to promote equity in all aspects of American life, excellence in public service and opportunity for all Americans.

Walt has a vast work history with experience in finance, personnel, public policy and collaboration with special interest groups. He believes in community service and is an active member of the Poulsbo North Kitsap Rotary club.
