Function/Purpose

Members of the Kitsap County Noxious Weed Control Board assist with the development of rules and regulations to  direct an effective county weed control or eradication program of noxious weeds.  Members assure compliance and coordination with state, federal and other applicable regulations.  Noxious weeds are invasive non-native plants that have been introduced to Washington and adversely effect human health and safety.  Whenever possible four out of five members shall be engaged in the primary production of agriculture products, such as farming, forestry, livestock production, nursery production or aquaculture.

Established
The Kitsap County Noxious Weed Control Board was activated in 2000 by Resolution 12-2000. State weed law gives local weed boards the authority to adopt rules and regulations, subject to notice and hearing as provided in chapters 42.30 and 42.32 RCW.

2006 Meeting Time and Location
Meetings are held monthly on the 3rd Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the Polplar Room in the Silverdale Community Center. Contact Dana Coggon (360) 307-4242 or email: dcoggon@co.kitsap.wa.us  for more information.

Membership
The County Commissioners appoint one weed board member to represent each weed district which corresponds to the school district boundaries.  At least four of the five weed board members should be involved in the primary production of agriculture.  Board member positions are advertised at least twice in a newspaper of general circulation in that district, with the last advertisement occurring at least ten days prior to the nomination.  Anyone interested in serving on the weed board submits the Board, Commission, Committee Application and the Weed Board Supplement which includes signatures of 10 voters from the applicants weed district.  Members serve without compensation, although they may be reimbursed for expenses incurred in the performance of their duties (e.g. mileage to board meetings).
