Summary of all Board of County Commissioner Meetings

The Board of Commissioners convenes seven types of meeting.

1.       Regular business meetings are held biweekly on the second and fourth Monday of each month, except for state holidays, at 10:00 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room. Agenda topics and Agenda Summaries (eight copies) should be scheduled through the Clerk of the Board a minimum of fourteen calendar days prior to the desired presentation date.

·         Work sessions are informal meetings held without any set agenda to provide the opportunity for Commissioners to advise each other and the Administrator of significant events, actions or meetings that are likely to generate public calls or media questions or otherwise may be of interest to the other Commissioners. Work sessions are held biweekly on Mondays at 10:00 a.m. in the commissioners’ conference room whenever there is not a regular business meeting scheduled or a state holiday.

·        Work Study meetings with the administrator and department heads are held on Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. in the third floor conference room of the Public Works Building. Work Study meetings are held according to a specific agenda to (A) review the issues scheduled on the agenda for the upcoming regular meeting, (B) provide quick summaries of issues of importance to the Board, and (C) review in detail specific issues that typically affect multiple departments and for which the presenter has submitted an executive summary at least ten days prior to the work study meeting. Work Study briefings are scheduled through the Commissioner's Office Administrative Coordinator.

·       Monday PM Briefings are held according to a specific agenda for the Administrator and the Board to review (A) specific issues that require direction from the Board and for which the presenter has submitted an executive summary at least ten days prior to the briefing, (B) the schedule of planned discussions to ensure that the Board’s limited time is focused on the highest priority issues, (C) issues the Administrator discussed with the Management team during their previous weekly meeting and issues the Board wants the Administrator to raise with the Management Team, and (D) to regularly review and revise as necessary the Board’s Policy Manual. Briefings with the administrator and other invited staff are held on Mondays at 2:00 p.m. in the commissioners' conference room. Briefing topics are scheduled through the Commissioner's Office Administrative Coordinator.

·        Special meetings are held when notice is provided as specified in RCW  36.32.090 and RCW 42.30.080.

·         Retreats are held each quarter according to a specific agenda to (A) establish goals, (B) evaluate how Board and staff are currently working as a team, (C) review the Board’s and staff’s expectations, and (D) review in detail specific issues that typically affect countywide activities and/or multiple departments and for which the presenter has submitted an executive summary at least one week prior to the retreat. Retreats with the administrator, senior staff and other invited parties are held quarterly at times and locations agreed to by the Board and advertised as required and specified in RCW  36.32.090 and RCW 42.30.080.

·        Executive sessions are held as permitted by RCW  42.30.110.

2.      The public is welcome at all Board meetings, with the exception of executive sessions, and may comment at specified times.

The public is welcome at all Board meetings, with the exception of executive sessions.  During regular business and special meetings the public may comment during public hearings and during those times designated on the agenda for public comment. All other meetings are intended as working meetings without opportunities for public comment unless requested by the Board.

3.      The Board takes final action on issues only in regular business meetings or special meetings

To ensure that the public has an opportunity to observe the Board’s actions, the Board takes final action on any ordinance, resolution, rule, regulation, order, or directive only in regular business meetings or property noticed special meetings.
