Preparing for Tomorrow's Emergency Gives Peace of Mind Today
By Commissioner Chris Endresen

Many of us choose to live in North Kitsap for its rural charm, access to the shoreline and community spirit. However, we have to be especially aware of how our location can impact us in the event of a major disaster.

A major earthquake could cripple the infrastructure that connects Bainbridge Island and Kitsap County to our neighbors. During a training drill in June at the Emergency Management Institute in Emmitsburg, Maryland, my colleagues and I were shown doctored photographs of an earthquake-damaged Agate Pass Bridge, which would isolate Bainbridge Island residents. Although the photograph and the scenarios we faced were not real, they were an eye-opening preparation for what can happen at any time.

For example, imagine you are a commuter on the Seattle to Bainbridge ferry when an earthquake strikes. Your boat could be unable to dock at Bainbridge Island, or it might have to be rerouted elsewhere to an undamaged dock. Along with further road and bridge closures, you may be unable to reach your home in Hansville in a matter of hours or even days. A scenario like this illustrates the importance of establishing a communication plan with your family to reunite everyone safely.

The Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management suggests that residents keep enough food, water and supplies on hand to be self-sufficient for three to seven days, and I urge North Kitsap residents especially to store enough to support themselves for up to a week. Don’t forget your prescription drugs. In the event of an emergency, residents cannot expect to be rescued immediately, or even in a few days. Those of us in North Kitsap can’t expect to leave the area right away, either. Roads and bridges will have to be thoroughly inspected to ensure their safety, even if they don’t appear to be damaged.

Taking the time to create a disaster kit and communication plan now can save your life later. For more information about emergency planning, Visit the Kitsap County Department of Emergency Management website at www.kitsapdem.org. With a little preparation and thought, we can continue to enjoy living here in North Kitsap and feel secure as we do so.
