Probation Services
Probation Services provides services to adult misdemeanor/ gross
misdemeanor offenders. Probation serves the judges of the district court by:
- Monitoring offenders’ compliance with the court orders for chemical
dependency treatment, domestic violence treatment, sexual offender
treatment, law abiding behavior and other sentencing requirements.
- Referring offenders to treatment and community resources.
- Motivating offenders to stay in treatment,
- Reporting violations to the Prosecutor’s Office and ultimately to the
court, for increased offender accountability.
Probation officers use a validated risk assessment for every offender seen.
This classification determines how often an offender should be seen to impact
the overall goals. Offenders may be seen face to face, weekly to once every 3
months. Risk is reassessed every six months. Compliance with court orders
generally reduces the frequency of face to face contact, but the offender
continues to be monitored for violations.
Probation maintains many community partnerships, with chemical dependency
treatment provides, mental health providers, law enforcement agencies,
prosecutors and defense attorneys. Equally important is the partnership with
victim advocates in our community, such as the YWCA.
Additional Services Provided
- Deferred Prosecution applications are reviewed by Probation Officers for
approval by the court. Once granted by the court, Probation Services monitor
defendants’ compliance with treatment monthly for the first two years and
review the defendants driving record every six months.
- Pretrial Diversion Agreements are monitored by Probation Services.
Pretrial diversion is an alternative to prosecution initiated by the
Prosecuting Attorney's Office and voluntarily agreed to by the defendant.
- For offenders of certain crimes who desire to move out of state,
Probation Services processes a formal request for supervision in the
receiving state for our District Court and the Bremerton Municipal Court.
(See below)
- Probation officers conduct screenings for the District and Superior
Courts when a victim requests a No Contact Order (NCO) to be modified or
rescinded.

Interstate Compact Agreement for Adult Offender Supervision
(ICAOS).
Effective July 1, 2005, certain misdemeanor offenders who desire to move/
travel out of state must receive the permission of the sentencing court.
Washington State is a member of the the Interstate Compact for Adult Offender
Supervision (ICAOS). This agreement currently covers all 50 states, the District
of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The purpose of the
agreement is to facilitate the transfer of offenders from state to state and to
provide for a continuity of supervision during that process.
The
ICAOS website
provides general information about the compact.
Every member of the compact has a
Commissioner
and unique procedures for their state.
