History of Manchester

First established in the 1860's and 1870's, logging, milling, agriculture and an extensive water transportation system have shaped the character of what was originally known to settlers as Brooklyn. This small waterfront community was renamed to Manchester in 1892 after the active seaport in England, with hopes for the same prosperity.

Early travel to Manchester was by boat only. Some rowed to Seattle for supplies and a regular steamboat schedule was established during the early 1900's. The steamboat served what is now known as Manchester, Colby, South Colby, Harper, Southworth and Seattle, with occasional trips to Fragaria and Ollala. World War II brought a sudden influx of people into the area. The community became a haven for tourists and summer visitors. Known for their generous portions and down-home food, the Manchester Inn was a favorite gathering place and remains as such today.

Ferry services were gradually decreased until 1949 when they were discontinued completely. This lack of public transportation made Manchester highly inaccessible, and Seattle once again became a distant city. This event temporarily stunted the growth of Manchester.

Construction of the Manchester Library is regarded as a significant event in the community's history. Although the area benefited from a previous library, the Library Board was notified in 1953 that the building was to be torn down to make room for private housing. Instead of deterring residents, the event stimulated the community to pull together, pooling their efforts and resources. Through a combination of donations, door-to-door solicitations, a rummage sale and a small loan, the community was able to afford the $1,800 expenditure. Doors opened in October 1954, making it the only free regional library unit of the Bremerton Regional Library south of Port Orchard.

Today Manchester is a quaint, quiet town with a population of approximately 6,000 residents. The community consists of a small variety of commercial businesses and services, the Manchester Library, the Manchester Post Office, two public docks, and several single-family residences with a handful of multi-family dwelling units.
