    Request for Code Interpretation (UFC 101.4)  The chief is authorized to render interpretations of this code and to make and enforce rules and supplemental regulations in order to carry out the application and intent of its provisions.  Such interpretations, rules and regulations shall be in conformance with the intent and purpose of this code and shall be available to the public during normal business hours.  

    Request for Approval of Alternate Materials and Methods (UFC 103.1.2)  The chief is authorized to approve alternate materials or methods provided that the chief finds that the proposed design, use or operation satisfactorily complies with the intent of this code and that the method of work performed or operation is, for the purpose intended, at least equivalent to that prescribed in this code in quality, strength, effectiveness, fire resistance, durability and safety.  Approvals under the authority herein contained shall be subject to the approval of the Building Official whenever the alternate material or method involves matters regulated by the Building Code.

        Request for Modification of Code Requirements due to practical difficulties (UFC 103.1.3)  The chief is authorized to modify any of the provisions of this code upon application in writing by the owner , a lessee or a duly authorized representative where there are practical difficulties in the way of carrying out the provisions of the code, provided that the spirit of the code shall be complied with, public safety secured and substantial justice done.  The particulars of such modification and the decision of the chief shall be entered upon the records of the department and a signed copy shall be furnished to the applicant.
