Kitsap County Fire Safety Advisory Committee Report on the Kona Village Fire

The Kona Village apartment fire in Bremerton (November 1997) resulted in four fatalities and caused approximately $7.5 million property damage. This local example is a grim reminder of how a large fire can devastate families and the community. However, this fire has also had a positive impact of generating discussion regarding acceptable levels of fire risk in Kitsap County for existing multi-family apartment buildings. The Kitsap County Fire Chiefs Association has encouraged the community to examine and identify fire safety conditions in existing apartment buildings which endanger the safety of citizens and firefighters beyond acceptable risk levels. The Fire Safety Advisory Committee report examines the committee's efforts to address fire and life safety problems within the community, as well as viable solutions. To enhance and maintain a sustainable community, employing innovative fire prevention strategies and concepts.

A complete copy of the report including enclosures are available upon request.  Duplication cost is $15.00 including tax or download it from this web page.

Please direct all questions or comments to Kitsap County Fire Marshal Office at (360) 337-7181 or fax (360) 337-4925.
