2013 is an important year for cicadas. This year, like every 17 years, a massive swarm hatches on the East Coast of the US. The timing of their emergence is mainly dependent on ground temperature, which must reach a steady 64 degrees for the insects to hatch. This map plots citizen-volunteered data about their soil temperature in order to predict when and where the insects will emerge.
