- Abstract:
- This feature class contains building footprints for all unincorporated areas of Kitsap County, Washington and most of the incoporated cities therein.
The footprint data is not based on any survey or legal description and is not intended to take the place of either. Please read the terms of use and instructions before using this data.
- Purpose:
- To provide a visual representation of structures in unincorporated areas of Kitsap County, based on aerial photography.
- Supplemental information:
- During the GIS user group/technical group meeting at CENCOM 4/13/06 a questionnaire was passed out asking what uses each department and organization would like use this dataset for and what attributes they would like to have associated with the footprints. Based on input received, it has been determined that the most effective way to publish the data is to attribute the footprints with the building height (HEIGHT), imagery used (IMAGERY), and originating organization (ORIGINATOR). The real property account number (RP_ACCT_ID) has not been included as an attribute because of frequency of updates to the parcel base. The RP_ACCT_ID can be derived as needed by performing a spatial join between the center points of the footprints and the parcels.

- The footprints have been checked against the parcel map based on structure and improvement values to check for missed structures. Parcels have been checked for the number of footprints on each so as to find repeats. These were then checked by hand and the best footprint for each used.

- The accuracy of the footprints varies considerably depending on the complexity of structures, surroundings, and the time of day photographed. Although care was taken to discern between driveways, lawns, roofs, and porches, there may be errors in areas where features were similar in color or partially obscured. This is especially true in heavily wooded areas where entire properties can be obscured by surrounding trees.
Footprint data from Walker & Associates was used as well as data contributed by North Kitsap Fire & Rescue. All other footprints were created by Kitsap County GIS. The spatial accuracy of the footprints varies considerably based on the imagery used as the lensing effect can cause considerable distortion near the edges of the image tiles. An attribute has been added to the footprints feature class listing the originating imagery for this reason.

- Footprints digitized visually in Autodesk Map 2004 based on the land use codes for parcels and urban growth areas with mosaic images of Kitsap County. In areas where a structure is partially obscured or where a building is difficult to distinguish from the surrounding features, effort has been made to approximate what would likely be found there. An effort has also been made to maintain right angles and parallel building faces. If a building appears to be symmetrical, the symmetrical faces of the building have been created as mirrored objects. Rectangular buildings are drawn either as rectangles and rotated into position, or as polylines and made to close.
The footprints have been converted from polylines in a .dwg document to a polygon feature class in an ArcGIS geodatabase. A cluster tolerance of 2 feet was used when converting so as to close open polylines to polygons.
