COUNCIL FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

PURPOSE

The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners formed the Kitsap County Council for Human Rights in 1989 following a cross-burning incident.  The purpose and establishment of the Council was affirmed in County Resolution No. 451-1994.  The Council's vision is that Kitsap County shall be a caring, supportive, and safe community which values each individual, celebrates individual differences, and recognizes the importance of each person's contribution to the community.

MISSION

The mission of the Kitsap County Council for Human Rights is twofold:

1) Advise county government and Kitsap County residents on issues related to discrimination, violence and harassment based on race or national origin, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or economic status;

2) Promote the equitable treatment of all citizens and reduce prejudice through the development of prevention policies, education, resource referrals, and advocacy.

MEETINGS

The Kitsap Council for Human Rights meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at the John Horsley Community Center, Island Lake Park, 1087 NW Island Lake Road, except for the following dates:

May 13th, Kitsap Room, Givens Community Center, 1026 Sidney,
Port Orchard

October 10th, North Kitsap School District Board Room, 18360 Caldart Avenue NE, Poulsbo

The 18th Annual Kitsap County Human Rights Conference will take place on Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Kitsap Conference Center in Bremerton.

The Kitsap County Council for Human Rights principal role is educational.  It has no authority to investigate and make findings in a discrimination case.  If you feel that you have been a victim of discrimination and would like to file a complaint, contact the state Human Rights Commission at www.hum.wa.gov/
