KITSAP COUNTY COUNCIL FOR HUMAN RIGHTS PURPOSE STATEMENT

The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners formed the Kitsap County Council for Human Rights in 1989 following a cross-burning incident. The purpose and establishment of the Council was affirmed in County Resolution No. 451-1994. The Council's vision is that Kitsap County shall be a caring, supportive, and safe community which values each individual, celebrates individual differences, and recognizes the importance of each person's contribution to the community.
MISSION
The mission of the Kitsap County Council for Human Rights is twofold:
  1. Advise county government and Kitsap County residents on issues related to discrimination, violence and harassment based on race or national origin, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or economic status;
  2. Promote the equitable treatment of all citizens and reduce prejudice through the development of prevention policies, education, resource, referrals, and advocacy.
MEETINGS
The Kitsap Council for Human Rights now meets monthly at 6 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month in the Cedar Meeting Room of the Silverdale Community Center, 9729 Silverdale Way NW, Silverdale. A retreat replaces the March 2013 meeting. There will be no March 12 regular meeting of the council.

Meeting dates for 2013 are: January 8, February 12, April 9, May 14, June 10, July 9, August 13, September 10, October 8 and November 12. This schedule is subject to change.

Fifteen unpaid volunteers from throughout the county who are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners for three-year terms.

Updated A new member is needed to fill a vacancy for a District 1 representative (previous vacancies in for District 2 and At-Large are full). The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners is currently reviewing applications. Please follow the links below for more information.

The Kitsap County Council for Human Rights principal roles is educational. It has no authority to investigate and make findings in a discrimination case. If you feel that you have been a victim of discrimination and would like to file a complaint, contact the state Human Rights Commission at www.hum.wa.gov.
