NEW AND RECENT ACTIVITIES

The Unforgotten, Run to Tahoma III, at 10:45 a.m., Saturday, May 26, 2012. 
Join us as we receive the unclaimed remains of deceased veterans from the Kitsap County Coroner in a brief ceremony and escort them in a cortege to Tahoma National Ceremony.  The event takes place outdoors at the coroner's office, 5010 NW Linden Lane, which is next to Pendergast Park in West Bremerton.  There is no seating, so bring a lawn chair and dress for the weather.  When you arrive, following the signs for ceremony parking or joining the cortege line to Tahoma National Cemetery.  There will be a 20 minute break following the ceremony and before the departure for Tacoma. BOARD FUNCTION / PURPOSE
The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners formed the Kitsap County Veterans Advisory Board on December 4, 2006 as allowed by Chapter 73.08 Revised Code of Washington, and County Ordinance 2.92 Veterans Assistance.

The purpose and establishment of the Veterans Advisory Board is to advise the board of county commissioners on the needs of local indigent veterans, the resources available to local indigent veterans, and programs that could benefit the needs of local indigent veterans and their families.


The Veterans Advisory Board meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

NUMBER OF MEMBERS/APPOINTMENT TERMS

Seventeen (17) unpaid volunteers from throughout the county who are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners for one, two, or three-year terms. All members must be veterans of military or merchant marine service.  A simple majority of the council shall be members of local chapters of national recognized veterans organizations.

On Saturday, Memorial Day Weekend, The Veterans Advisory Board and Combat Veterans International, Chapter 5 receive the remains of unclaimed deceased veterans from the county coroner's office in a short ceremony and escort them to Tahoma National Cemetery.

Memorial
Kitsap County has several memorials, monuments and other sites of interest to veterans, ranging from the grave of a sailor who was an Indian Wars casualty in November 1856 to contemporary times.
