Mosquito Fleet Trail PlanThe idea for the Mosquito Fleet Trail (MFT) grew from the Kitsap County Greenways Plan completed in 1996. County residents wanted a mapped system of connected open space. The Greenways Plan identifies and links transportation, recreation, natural and scenic resources. The MFT Plan defines in greater detail a project that is both part of the Kitsap County Bicycle Plan and the Kitsap County Open Space Plan.
The basic concept is a trail corridor for use by bicyclists and pedestrians that skirts the eastern shoreline of the County and Bainbridge Island, connecting historic Mosquito Fleet docks along the way. The plan identifies ten project areas between Kingston and Southworth based on community and political boundaries. These project areas are further broken down into a multitude of segments. Each project area is mapped and described in detail in the Mosquito Fleet Trail Plan (MFT Plan). The MFT Plan maps primary and secondary routes, locates historic mosquito fleet sites and potential viewpoints sites. The plan was completed and adopted in 2001.
