County Appoints New District Court
ORCHARD, WAŚStephen J. Holman, Kitsap County Court
Commissioner and Bainbridge Island Municipal Court Judge, was appointed
today as a fourth District Judge by the Kitsap Board of County
Commissioners. The Kitsap County District Court has
jurisdiction over misdemeanors and gross misdemeanor crimes, which carry a
maximum penalty of one (1) year in jail and/or a $5,000 fine. Holman's
appointment is through the end of 2006. He will be required to run for
election in the primary in September and general election in November.
"Given his long-standing track record of exemplary
performance in Kitsap County and throughout the region, Steve Holman was the
choice for this appointment," said Jan Angel, Chair of the Board of
Commissioners. "Steve has served the citizens of this county for over 20
years, and we look forward to his continued service to this community."
Holman was endorsed by
the three current District Court judges, six current
or former Kitsap County Superior Court judges, four state Court of Appeals
judges, three state Supreme Court justices, numerous district and municipal
judges from around the state and more than 50 Kitsap lawyers.
"We are delighted by the
board's decision to appoint Steve Holman to bench of the District Court,"
said Maury Baker, District Court Administrator.
"Steve has been an integral
part of this court's success over the past 16 years. His appointment
reflects a recognition of his hard work and dedication to the delivery of
justice in Kitsap County, and needless to say, is well deserved."
In addition to his current
appointments, Holman's judicial experience includes Judge Pro Tem from 1985
to 1990 in Kitsap County and Pierce County District Courts and Bainbridge
Island, Poulsbo, Bremerton and Port Orchard Municipal Courts. His legal
experience includes work with the King and Kitsap County Prosecutors'
Offices and the law firms of Brunton and Holman of Bainbridge Island and
Wecker, Hunko and Holman.
Holman earned his B.A. from the University of
San Diego, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Santa Clara University law
program in 1977. He is a member of numerous legal and judicial associations,
including the Washington State Bar Association and California State Bar
Association, and has been professionally appointed to a number of committees
and task forces. His community involvement includes serving on many local
boards, as well as coaching Little League, assisting with Habitat for
Humanity and serving as a group leader for the Bainbridge Island YMCA
Holman resides on Bainbridge Island with his wife,
Mary, and has two adult children, Seamus and Lauren.
