Kitsap County Commission on Children
and Youth Addresses Suicide Prevention

ORCHARD, WA—The Kitsap County Commission on Children and Youth
will highlight local efforts at preventing youth suicide at its regularly
scheduled meeting on Thursday, May 4, 2006, 4:30–6:30
p.m., at the Norm Dicks Government Center located at 345 6th Street,
Bremerton, WA. Speakers include Renee Arcement, Public Education Coordinator
from the statewide Youth Suicide Prevention Program, as well as local
representatives from the Kitsap County Health District and Kitsap County
Juvenile Court. As reported in the 2002 and 2004 Kitsap County Healthy Youth
Survey, 13% of Kitsap County youth surveyed in grades 8, 10 and 12 reported
seriously considering suicide during the past twelve months.
The Kitsap County Commission on Children and Youth is an appointed body of
the Kitsap County Commissioners, with up to twenty-four representatives from
education and schools, health and social service providers, juvenile justice
and law enforcement, community leaders and non-profit organizations. The
commission is charged to serve as an advocate for children and youth in the
county, provide a focus for children and youth issues, and be a resource for
community groups, agencies and organizations.
