Volunteers needed for mentoring, diversion and truancy support at Kitsap County

PORT ORCHARD, WA—Opportunities are available now for people to help youth at risk in the Kitsap County Juvenile Department. Volunteers are needed to serve as mentors and as members on the county’s boards for diversion and truancy.

Kitsap County’s Juvenile Department mentoring programs match promising youth with role models from our community. Mentors help the youth set goals and recognize their individual talents. The county provides both training and support for volunteers, with mentoring opportunities available nearly anytime.

Citizens volunteers are also needed to serve on the Community Diversion and Truancy Boards. Board members will be trained to interview youth and their parents/guardians on a case-by-case basis, offering recommendations and agreements in lieu of a court hearing. Both board meetings are held in Port Orchard and Poulsbo, and both adults and students 9th through 12th grade who can volunteer a minimum of three hours a month are encouraged to apply.

Background checks are required for all applicants of Juvenile Department volunteer programs.
