The new Coroner’s facility will be set in a serine, out of the way, hill top
setting in Bremerton, WA. The building will be adjacent to the County CenCom
building and is otherwise surrounded by evergreen trees.
Designed by Rice Ferguson Miller Architects, the building will go out to bid
Fall 2007, and construction should be completed by Fall 2008.
Due to the nature of the facility, the “public” areas are rather limited,
and the number of visitors would be somewhat rare. The artwork that would be
desirable for this facility would be mindful of the very personal nature of
the building’s purpose. Soothing, calming, healing are some of the
adjectives that should be descriptive of the submitted artwork or commission
proposals.
The Budget for this project is approximately $25,000.
The Arts Board has identified the following areas as suitable for public
art:
Exterior: The main thrust of this art call is to find interesting and
appropriate artwork for the main approach and entryway to the building. The
specific areas where artist are asked to visualize their work are:
Long Wall: There is a 53 foot long wall that could have a decorative
treatment to make more interesting, on or in front of the wall surface, such
as iron work that could substitute for a trellis. The wall will be cement
block, and there will be a shaped green lawn in front.
Entry Walkway: There is a gently curving wall that steers visitors into the
building. The first 9 feet are low, meeting a grouping of posts, which hold
corresponding beams. This architectural element acts as a sort of solemn
threshold. For the artist, this divider and trellis structure has the
potential to create an applied or integrated artwork or sculpture.
Freestanding Sculpture: There is the possibility to place a freestanding
sculpture near the front of the building.
Any exterior artwork needs to be secure and appropriate for the weather
conditions of the Northwest.
