Kitsap Community & Agricultural Alliance Hosts Pierce Conservation District
Roundtable
Silverdale, WA. - January
22, 2009 - The Kitsap Community & Agricultural Alliance will present two
members from our neighboring Pierce Conservation District at their next
meeting, Tuesday, February 5th at 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Monty Mahan,
Executive Director and Sarah Garitone, Program Manager, will share programs
they have implemented in Pierce County to assist local agriculture.
The Pierce Conservation
District has been a lead agency in retaining local family farms and high
quality agricultural soils in Pierce County since 1948. Recent work in
close coordination with Pierce County government and the Pierce County WSU
Extension has focused upon regulatory reform and marketing assistance to
keep local family farms profitable.
District programs have
included buying locally produced wholesale vegetables at retail rates for
distribution to low income seniors and disabled, marketing assistance to
farmers markets, support for community gardens and startup food
cooperatives, and support for the Pierce County Farming Assistance,
Revitalization and Marketing Board.
More information on these
programs may be obtained at
www.piercecountycd.org or by contacting the Pierce Conservation
District at 253-845-9770.
The KCAA organization
meets the first Tuesday of the month (except the July meeting is the second
Tuesday) at the Norm Dicks Government Center, 345 6th Street, Bremerton.
