Commissioner Garrido returns from DC trip

Port Orchard, WA — Kitsap County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido went to Washington, D.C., last week (March 7-11) attending the National Association of Counties Legislative Conference and meeting with elected officials about Kitsap County’s stimulus package requests.

A highlight of the conference was meetings with members of President Barack Obama’s cabinet, including Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

Chu told county officials the stimulus package includes $3 billion for state and local energy projects, such as home energy audits, weatherization programs and energy efficiency retrofits.

Donovan said a new HUD focus will be on helping to build sustainable communities. He announced the formation of the Office for Sustainable Communities, which he expects to be headed by former King County Executive Ron Sims.

All of the secretaries emphasized their desire to work with county governments. Garrido said their comments left her “hopeful for those of us in local communities to feel that connected.”

Garrido also met with staff members for Sen. Patty Murray and Sen. Maria Cantwell and with Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Belfair, and Rep. Jay Inslee, D-Bainbridge Island, to discuss stimulus requests that Kitsap County will be submitting. Some of the projects include:

  • Kitsap County Courthouse renovation and improvement project
  • Food & Farm Policy Council
  • Bethel Road widening project
  • Education, Training and Human Services programs
  • Broadband stimulus: Technology Kiosk
  • Central Kitsap Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrades
  • South Kitsap Regional Park improvements
  • Kitsap County Sustainability Team
  • Salmon habitat and flood plain enhancement projects
