Kitsap County Offers Shoreline
Restoration: Alternatives for Kitsap County Shorelines Booklet
(Port Orchard) - Kitsap County Department of Community Development has
produced a booklet titled Shoreline Restoration: Alternatives for Kitsap
County Shorelines. The booklet was funded by the Washington State Department
of Ecology as an addendum to grant funding currently provided for Kitsap
County’s Shoreline Master Program Update.
The 11-page booklet is aimed primarily at shoreline property owners, and
contains a brief explanation answering a common question: “what is shoreline
restoration?” Various types of restoration projects are described, such as:
utilization of native vegetation, logs and stumps as an alternative to hard
bulkheads on both marine and freshwater shorelines; and replacement of
stream culverts that are constricting fish access and water flow. For each
different type of restoration, bullet points describe the roles and
benefits, along with “before” and “after” photos of successful projects. In
addition, the booklet provides information on preservation through
conservation easements, future public restoration projects and links to
additional resources.
The booklet will be utilized for public outreach as part Kitsap County’s
Shoreline Master Program update, and demonstrates some proven alternatives
for consideration by landowners with an interest in shoreline restoration.
