Property Tax Refund for Storm Related Damage

(Port Orchard, WA) - “Property damaged in the storm November 22nd can likely qualify for a property tax refund,” according to Jim Avery, County Assessor. Property destroyed involuntarily is eligible for a prorated refund from the date of destruction. “This means property owners who paid their 2010 property taxes may be entitled to a small refund,” said Avery. “Equally important is the fact that the value of the destroyed property will be reduced on the 2010 assessment roll and owners will see a lower property tax bill in 2011,” Avery added.

Property owners with destroyed property are urged to call the Assessor’s customer service line at 360.337.7160 or contact the office by email at assessor@co.kitsap.wa.us. You can download the destroyed property form from http://kitsapgov.com/assr. Copies of repair estimates are requested by the assessor, and are used to calculate the amount of damage.
