Celebration of Kitsap Food Community

(Port Orchard, WA) - December 10 is a date that marks Terra Madre Day around the world, and the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners will proclaim December 10, 2010 as “Terra Madre Day” in Kitsap County. They also celebrate our locally produced foods through three events to be held December 10-12.

A panel discussion scheduled during the Annual Human Rights Conference on Friday, December 10, is Fair Food for All. Rob Purser of the Suquamish Tribe moderates the session that also features Mary Cathern Edwards (Master Gardener), Scott Daniels (Kitsap Health District), and Chris Plemmons (Olympic College). The conference begins at 8:00 am at the Bremerton Conference Center. Further information about conference registration and payment is at:

A food trade fair promotes Kitsap foods for taste and purchase from 11 am-5:30 pm on Saturday, December 11 at the Jenne-Wright Building in Silverdale. The fair, “Salone del Gusto, Kitsap” (which means “Room of Tastes”), is modeled after a Slow Food conference held every two years in Torino, Italy. Local vendors are encouraged to participate, and there is still time for local food producers, cooks, and more to reserve a space to show off local foods.

In addition to foods, there will be food-related workshops and discussions. These include:

  • 1:00 Reflections on Terra Madre by 2010 Delegates
Jon Garfunkel, Charlotte Garrido, Ron Purser – Kitsap County
Sarah Garitone Wilcox – Pierce County
Matthew Dillon – Jefferson County, invited

  • 2:00 Healthy Foods: Buying Local, Eating Local
    Fran Miller, Community Nutritionist
Ariane Shanley, South Kitsap School District

  • 3:00 From Production to Distribution and Beyond
Andy and Sarah Wilcox, Wilcox Family Farms
    Shannon Harkness, WSU Extension
    Jean Schanen, FreshLocal
Toni Fuller, Kitsap County (Food Waste & Food to Flowers)

  • 4:00 Native Plants & Heirloom Seeds
    Rob Purser, Suquamish Tribe
Matthew Dillon, Abundant Life Seed Foundation, invited
    Jon Garfunkel, EduCulture Project

Members of the Kitsap Food & Farm Policy Council’s Education Committee will assist with informational displays and organizing volunteers for the event. Admission is open to the public ($2.00 per person).

On December 12, the Bay Street Bistro in Port Orchard will feature local foods in their Terra Madre Sunday Night Supper from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Join us as we show off Kitsap County’s bounty! Further information, vendor applications and directions to the venues can be found at
