Commissioner Josh Brown recently announced the Hood Canal Summer Chum
Recovery Symposium set for June 23rd at the Hood Canal Vista Pavilion in
Port Gamble, Washington. “The symposium serves dual purposes,” said Brown.
“It’s a forum to evaluate progress made toward the recovery of summer chum
in Hood Canal, and an opportunity to consider how salmon recovery supports
the broader vision for Hood Canal conservation. Both areas are vital keys to
the recovery of chum salmon in our community,” Brown added. The event,
sponsored by the Hood Canal Coordinating Council (HCCC), runs from 9:00 a.m.
to 3:00 on June 23rd.
In 2005, the Coordinating Council was designated as the “Regional Recovery
Organization” for Hood Canal summer chum. They were previously designated
“Lead Entity” for the Hood Canal watershed. Commissioner Brown chairs the
HCCC and is committed to the dual role of the council. “This program is
unique in that this dual responsibility provides the Council with resources
to help coordinate the entities involved with implementing the recovery
plan, and fosters the implementation of habitat actions,” Brown said.
The Council completed the Summer Chum Recovery Plan in November 2005. The
plan was adopted by the State of Washington in April 2006, and adopted by
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Services in
Brown also was recently appointed to the Salmon Recovery Funding Board by
