'Tis the Season to Prepare for the Fair

(Port Orchard, WA) - The Kitsap County community has begun pitching in to spruce up the county Fairgrounds in preparation for the Kitsap County Fair and Stampede, which will be held August 24-28. Thirty Windermere Real Estate agents from the Silverdale office led off on June 17th by painting, weeding, planting, and pressure washing in the area of the main entrance to the fair. Team Innovative Landscaping and Sabelhaus provided beauty bark and paint respectively for the event. On June 22nd the United Way Day of Caring provided 18 volunteers who focused on the Eagle’s Nest, playground area, and weeding throughout the fairgrounds, and 15 teen volunteers through the county youth volunteer program worked on planting the new rain gardens and a flower bed on July 1st. “This is another great example of how the Kitsap community comes together to make a difference” noted Commissioner Robert Gelder. “It’s heartening to see volunteers come forward to fill the need. I cannot offer enough thanks.”

But there is far more to be done. Billie Schmidt, Superintendent of Operations for the Parks Department says she is seeking additional volunteer groups for fair preparation and stewardship groups who would be interested in supporting the fairgrounds throughout the fall, winter, and spring months. The idea would be to spread out the care and maintenance over the year rather than focus entirely in the spring and early summer.

For more information about how to get a group together to volunteer at the fairgrounds for year round stewardship or to prepare for the fair this year, contact Billie Schmidt, Superintendent of Operations at 360-337-5371 or bschmidt@co.kitsap.wa.us .
