Outstanding Volunteers Awarded Recognition
(Port Orchard, WA)
The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners will recognize the
Organizacio Voluntario Guatemalteco as Outstanding County Volunteers at the
board’s Sept. 12 business meeting.
The Board of Commissioners is presenting the Organizacio Voluntario
Guatemalteco with a certificate and added the group’s name to the special
Outstanding County Government Volunteer plaque on display in the lobby of
the Kitsap County Administration Building.
Lori Raymaker, Parks Stewardship Coordinator of the Department of Parks &
Recreation, nominated this dedicated group of volunteers from the local
Guatemalan community. One of the group’s leaders approached the parks
department in April 2010 and asked if there was a way they could help.
Working through language barriers, Raymaker introduced the group to the
Adopt-A-Park program and they selected Island Lake Park, a popular county
park located between Poulsbo and Silverdale. These volunteers have worked at
the park on the first Saturday of every month since then, performing tasks
the parks staff does not have the time to do. They maintain landscaped areas
surrounding the community center and park entrance, clear trails, clean and
clear the picnic areas and picnic tables and remove invasive weeds.
According to Raymaker, their work throughout the park, especially around the
community center, has made the park more welcoming and inviting for the
public. “Their attention to detail and work ethic is outstanding!” she
“Many times, members of this group have told me that adopting the park is
their way of being able to give back to the County for all of the services
that the County provides for them. It’s not uncommon to have entire families
come out to the park to help on the work day,” she said. Because they enjoy
giving back to the community so much,
Organizacio Voluntario Guatemalteco also recently adopted Old Mill Park.
County is lucky to have this dedicated community group volunteer with us,”
