Attention South Kitsap residents! Interest survey available to learn recreational facility preferences
Kitsap County and City of Port Orchard seek responses to help shape future discussions

(Port Orchard, WA) - The City of Port Orchard and Kitsap County want to know if South Kitsap residents are interested in the possibility of locating an indoor recreational facility in the South Kitsap area. A taskforce made up of South Kitsap community representatives helped prepare a survey to receive opinions from local residents about recreational, fitness and community center opportunities for all ages. Following a review of the survey results, the taskforce will recommend whether there should be further efforts on a facility. If so, further research will help determine the potential size, scale and amenities of such a facility.

"This survey is to find out what is available for indoor recreation and fitness and if local people want something more in the South Kitsap community,” said Commissioner Charlotte Garrido. "Asking about citizen opinions brings us a step toward a broader community conversation if there is enough interest," Garrido added. “We are not predetermining whether there should be a facility or a particular location and activities.”

Over the course of two months, the citizen’s Taskforce helped shaped the survey objectives, outreach methods and what information is necessary at this stage of the discussion. “One of the objectives of this survey and overall project is to recognize the instrumental role of local and private fitness and recreational businesses in South Kitsap and not duplicate services and programs already provided, “ said City of Port Orchard Mayor Tim Matthes. “The discussion about an indoor recreational facility requires transparency, to reach a wide range of citizens and gauge how such services should be paid for and by whom, “Matthes said.

This survey is available through midnight on April 30, 2013. You may take the survey at If you are unable to access the survey or do not have access to a computer and would like a hard copy, please contact Angie Silva by phone or at the e-mail address listed above.

The survey is intended for South Kitsap residents who generally reside south of west Bremerton, north of Gig Harbor and east of Belfair. Only one submission per IP address is permitted..
