Veteran honors veterans

(Port Orchard) - Marion (Mick) Hersey, MSCS (AW) USN Retired was recently honored by the Kitsap County Board of County Commissioners as an ‘Outstanding Kitsap County Government Volunteer’ for his work in refurbishing hundreds of Veteran’s Memorials throughout Kitsap County. Along with refurbishing the memorials, Hersey developed a brochure on all the Veteran’s memorials and Museums in Kitsap County. His goal: “To honor our Veterans by preserving the past and thanking those that are still serving, as we remember and honor our Patriots as well.”

Mick’s quest to honor Veterans began three years ago. His first endeavor was a Daughters of the American Revolution plaque near the east anchorage of the Manette Bridge. Next were the 350 plaques along the Bremerton Boardwalk, which began his 3-year venture to refurbish most of the 50 Veteran’s memorials throughout Kitsap County. Mick also solicited assistance from local hardware supplies, engaged the Navy community from Naval Hospital Bremerton, USS Ronald Reagan and USS John C. Stennis to provide labor, and local restaurants to supply refreshments for the volunteers.

Along with refurbishing Veteran’s memorials, Mick is involved with many Veteran events in Kitsap County, including the upcoming Veteran’s Day Ceremony. This free event is open to the public andis held on Veteran’s Day, November 11, at the Kitsap Pavilion, 1200 NW Fairgrounds Road, Bremerton, located at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. The Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council of Navy League provides the coordination and funds for this event along with 42 other organizations, making this the largest Veteran’s Day program in the State of Washington. Doors open from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The program starts at 10:30 am with pomp and circumstance and a formal Parade of Colors. 24 display booths will include vintage military uniforms and vehicles. Kitsap County Commissioner Josh Brown will introduce all military and political dignitaries. Rear Admiral Dietrich Kuhlmann, Commander, Submarine Group Nine and Guy Stitt, Bremerton Navy League Ambassador will further welcome guests. This year, the keynote speaker is Lourdes E. Alvarado-Ramos, Director of the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs. Free refreshments are provided by Crazy Eric’s Drive-In and Costco. Bremerton High School Marching Band is providing music. For additional information please contact Captains Sandra and Earle Smith at 360.876.0255, or captstwo@wavecable.com.
