Seasons Green-ings!

(Port Orchard) - Did you know Americans throw away 25% more trash during the Thanksgiving to New Year’s holiday period than any other time of the year? The added food waste, shopping bags, packaging, wrapping paper, bows, and ribbons add up to an additional 1 million tons of waste each week according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

“Many of us spend the holiday season rushing from store to store, buying gift after gift that doesn’t reflect our true joy in giving”, says Toni Fuller with the Kitsap County Solid Waste Division. “We want just the perfect gift for someone else. Or we are looking for exactly the right food and decorations for a holiday get-together. Often we wear ourselves out trying to create holiday cheer”.

“Instead of wasting time and energy in the process, and creating a lot of unnecessary waste, we’re encouraging shoppers to think ‘outside the box’, and be waste-wise instead,” says Fuller. Residents are encouraged to think about the environment while purchasing this holiday season. Relax for a moment, and think about your planned purchases. Are you buying too much? Do your family and friends really need all these gifts? Would something else work better?
