County Commissioners honor students for Kitsap Recycles Day posters

The Kitsap County Board of Commissioners is honoring ten local students during their regular meting tonight. The students are the winners of the second annual Kitsap Recycles Day poster contest in celebration of Kitsap Recycles Day, February 15. Kitsap Recycles Day is a day set aside to remind residents of the importance of buying and using recycled products in order to close the recycling loop.

Closing the loop is a process in which post-consumer waste is collected, recycled, and used to make new products. For example, recycled paper can be made into cereal boxes or egg cartons, and plastic bottles can be made into new bottles or polyester fleece for clothing.

The winning posters will be published, two each Friday for five consecutive Fridays beginning February 14, in the A&E section of the Kitsap Sun. Winning poster entries are also posted on the county web site here.

Christopher Piercy, the Recycling Coordinator for Kitsap County, commented “It’s incredibly encouraging to see the influx of posters we see on Kitsap Recycles Day. You can tell each student has a passion for recycling, reducing waste, and the environment. It is especially fascinating to see the grasp they all have on the value of “closing the loop” – not just recycling, but buying recycled content products.”
