Kitsap County seeks community input for 2016-2035 Comprehensive Plan Update
Launches new website ( for residents to share vision ideas

(Port Orchard, WA) - Kitsap County’s Department of Community Development unveiled a new website as County staff gear up for the 2016-2035 Comprehensive Plan update. The website will foster two-way communication between County residents and County staff about the update.

“The next Comprehensive Plan update is critically important for County residents as it sets the tone and direction of County government for twenty years. Jobs, businesses, housing, transportation, protecting the natural environment, quality communities, and providing services are key elements of the plan. We need citizen involvement. This new website is a fantastic way to do that,” said County Commissioner Charlotte Garrido, Chair of the Board of Commissioners. Commissioner Garrido added that by mid-September residents of unincorporated Kitsap County will be receiving postcards with information about the update process and the new website.

“Often the Comprehensive Plan update is seen as a Department of Community Development effort. Based on our success with the Shoreline Master Plan update, we’ve included the Public Health District, Kitsap Economic Development Alliance, the Community Block Grant Program, Kitsap Human Services and the Sheriff to the DCD team responsible the update development,” said Larry Keeton, Director of Community Development (DCD). “It has to be a holistic approach if we want quality communities. And, our outreach aims to reach all of our citizens including people that may have not participated in the past. The website, amongst other efforts, will assist in achieving this,” he said.

Washington State has some of the country’s most wide-ranging legislation to guide planning in the areas of affordable housing, economic development, environmental protection, property rights, historic lands and buildings, natural resource industries, open space and recreation, public services, regional transportation, shoreline management, and sprawl reduction. Required under Washington State’s Growth Management Act (GMA), the County’s update will be completed in June of 2016.

Kitsap County is home to many vibrant and active residential and business communities. During development of the Comprehensive Plan Update, County officials and staff will engage community members for input on their visions for the County.

“Great communities don’t just happen; they take vision, planning and team work. The community’s ideas and input are key to assure a solid, implementable Comprehensive Plan update that will provide vision and direction for the years ahead,” Keeton added.
