Training for Court-Appointed Special Advocates takes place this month

(Port Orchard) - Acting as Guardian ad Litems, Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) support the best interest of children involved in dependency cases related to abuse, neglect or where there is no capable parent. Kitsap County CASA volunteer training is scheduled to begin Sept. 12, with an additional three-day session beginning Nov. 14, at the Kitsap County Youth Services Center, 1338 SW Old Clifton Road, Port Orchard. Pre-registration and a background check are required.

Volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment to the program and dedicate 10 to 20 hours per month. During training, CASAs gain knowledge of working with children, mental health and medical professionals, and about courtroom procedures and expectations of judges. Learn how you can help girls and boys have a voice in court while supporting social workers who may not be able to give children the time and attention they deserve.

For more information, go to www.kitsapgov.com/juv/casa/default.htm, and to register call 360.337.5484 or e-mail casainfo@co.kitsap.wa.us.
