County Clerk warns of jury scams

(Port Orchard, WA) - “Citizens in Kitsap County and around the state are being targeted once again by con-artists,” warns Dave Peterson, Kitsap County Clerk.

Here’s how the scam works. The phone rings. When the citizen answers, a caller asserts the citizen has missed jury duty and a warrant has been or will be issued for their arrest, or the sheriff is on the way). The only way to stop it is to give the caller a credit or debit card number, purchase a prepaid card, etc. to pay the fine – all designed to get money from the citizen.

“There is no monetary penalty for missing jury duty here in Kitsap,” said Peterson. "We ever call a juror and ask for money. Missing jury service likely results in a postcard stating the service must be rescheduled. And that’s it,” Peterson added.

Citizens are advised to never give financial information over the phone to any unknown person or entity. If in doubt, hang up and call the institution or entity on a publicly listed number and ask if the call was legitimate.
