Let's celebrate Building Safety Month!

Join Kitsap County staff and local partners to learn more about safety for you, your family, and our community

(Port Orchard, WA)  Around the country, it is in the news almost every week-- an avoidable accident involving building safety. To combat the occurrences of accidents and their related injuries and costs, Kitsap County Department of Community Development (DCD) is hosting it’s 1st Annual Building Safety Fair.

On Friday, May 29th, from 1:00 – 3:00pm, DCD and community partners are welcoming the public to the Kitsap County Administration Building in Port Orchard to raise awareness of building safety.

“We all know the acceptable number for injuries and accidents in our community is zero,” said Jeffrey Rowe, Assistant Director of Kitsap County Community Development.

“We are very excited about this year’s fair and have a lot of great events planned for our residents to learn more about safe building practices and other safety and money saving ideas,” Rowe continued, noting clinics on deck building, workshops and other presentations. Kitsap County Building Officials also will be reviewing important safety tips and be available to answer questions.

Other community members will be on hand to share safety tips, especially for children.

South Kitsap Fire and Rescue will be on site to review important information about using and installing car seats and booster seats, important steps to take to stay safe around water and to review general backyard safety tips,” Rowe explained.

With environmental health also at the top of many peoples’ minds, the Fair will offer residents hands-on activities to learn more about rainstorm run-off and erosion how it can impact the water in Puget Sound. There will be additional volunteers sharing information about technical and financial assistance to enhance residents’ yards, reduce pollution, and stop stream erosion.

No Building Safety Fair in Kitsap County would be completed with out a discussion of earthquake preparedness.

“Do you and your group have a disaster preparedness plan for when the “big one” hits the Northwest? Do you know how to explain your disaster preparedness plan to children?” Rowe asked. To help with this planning the American Red Cross will have interactive games and demonstrations to help adults and children better prepare for a possible disaster.

Other partners will be on had to share valuable money saving ideas with residents. Puget Sound Energy will be providing information on energy saving programs, including instant rebates, valuable offers and other useful energy efficiencies.

The Building Safety Fair is Friday May 29 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Kitsap County Administration Building 619 Division St, Port Orchard, WA.
