Fire Marshal's office receives grant for new cameras

(Port Orchard) - The Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s office recently received a $2,850 grant from FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers. The proceeds from the grant are being used to purchase new cameras to aid in fire investigations. “The cameras we use in investigations are exposed to dust and debris, and the damp conditions at a fire can cause damage to conventional cameras,” said Jackie Blackwood, Deputy Fire Marshal. “Our current cameras are not designed for working in that type of environment,” Blackwood added.

The grant will be used to purchase Nikon D7100 digital SLR cameras. These have a high-end design with a camera body that provides moisture and dust resistance to protect the camera’s internal parts from the elements. They are also capable of shooting high definition video which will help with the investigation process.

The Kitsap County Fire Marshal's Office enhances fire safety through quality fire inspections, plan review, fire investigation and fire prevention education to minimize property loss, maintain community awareness of fire safety and to reduce the tragedy of fires in Kitsap County. The Fire Marshal’s office averages about 115 fire investigations each year. The investigation helps determine origin and cause of the fire.
