Bringing golf to kids and teens of all backgrounds

(Port Orchard) - The First Tee Program will begin teaching at Village Greens Golf Course in April. This nationwide initiative began as a way to bring golf to kids and teens that otherwise would not be exposed to the game and its positive values. Since that time, the program has steadily grown into a robust youth service organization, impacting, influencing and inspiring more than 9 million young people nationwide.

The First Tee of Puget Sound was formed in 2010, and has been teaching the game of golf to youth in Pierce County and Kitsap County both in classrooms and at area golf courses. To date they have taught over 15,500 youth. Although youth ages 7-18 may register, The First Tee of Puget Sound intentionally targets at risk youth who may otherwise not get the chance to play golf. As golf is a networking game for many businesses, it helps even the playing field in the workplace when they become adults.

Parents interested in the First Tee Program should contact Ryan Kallenberger at 253.777.7597 or register at www.thefirstteesps.org.

Village Greens Golf Course is located at 2298 Fircrest Drive SE ub Port Orchard, across from the Orchard Heights Elementary School. The course is a public 18-hole executive golf course with a covered driving range, putting and chipping greens. Rental clubs and pull carts are available. “The Village Greens Golf Course is ideal for … new golfers…,” said Larry Gilhuly, USGA consultant. More information about the course can be found at www.villagegreensgolfcourse.com.
