We're trying crowd funding as a way to improve the tennis courts at the Fairgrounds. The County and CK Schools have put up $50,000 of the $65,000 to improve these much-used courts. We're hoping crowd funding can fill the $15,000 gap. The site is up at

Parks Department launches crowd funding campaign for Fairgrounds tennis courts

(Port Orchard, WA) - Anyone who plays on the tennis courts at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds knows they need improvements. The courts are home courts to two high schools and adult leagues and also used by the general public. But the lines are barely visible, the color is nearly gone and there are cracks cover a good portion of four of the courts.

The walkway between the upper and lower courts is inadequate at best. Improvements to the courts will cost $65,000 and so far, Kitsap County has provided $30,000 in capital funds and partnered with the Central Kitsap School District, which contributed $20,000. This month, a special fundraising effort kicks off with support from the National Recreation and Parks Association to raise the last $15,000 of improvement costs.

“One of Kitsap County’s goals is to provide safe and healthy communities. Improving the Fairgrounds tennis courts is long overdue,” said Commissioner Ed Wolfe. “We are pleased to partner with the Central Kitsap School District on this project that benefits our students and the public. These courts get a lot of use year-round and hopefully having improved facilities will encourage more people to get outside and play.” Funds will be used to resurface all six courts, install steps from the upper level to the lower level courts, add bio-swales to improve drainage, and repair the restroom that was closed due to vandalism.

The Fairgrounds Tennis Court Improvements Project was selected to be featured on the crowdfunding site, Fund Your Park, through a competitive application process with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Fund Your Park is a crowdfunding platform designed by NRPA exclusively for park and recreation agencies. Crowdfunding includes a social media blitz for one month, beginning March 29 and running through April 28, seeking tax-deductible donations to complete funding for the tennis court improvements. “We’re almost there with funding this project,” said Billie Schmidt, Superintendent of Operations for the Kitsap County Parks Department. “Now we are asking the community to help us get the rest of the way.”
