Sunde Rd. culvertSunde Road
Culvert Replacement Project
To improve fish passage and enhance habitat, Kitsap County will be permanently closing Sunde Road at Clear Creek and removing the culvert in Summer 2013.
The existing culvert at Sunde Road prevents fish from accessing upstream habitat on Clear Creek. Because the culvert is listed as a fish-passage barrier, replacing it is a high priority. In addition to improving fish passage, this project will restore instream and riparian habitat and improve water quality.

Based on technical analysis and feedback from residents, after considering the options the County decided to remove the culvert, dead-end Sunde Road on both sides of the creek, and install a footbridge.

  Project Schedule and Status

On July 1, 2013, Sunde Road was closed permanently to through traffic, and construction began on the creek restoration and pedestrian bridge.  Permanent turnarounds and salmon viewing areas were constructed at the point of closure on both sides of the project.

Sunde Road Culvert Ribbon Cutting

Update On October 9, 2013, an estimated 100 people - community members and fourth graders from nearby Clear Creek Elementary School -  celebrated the opening of the pedestrian bridge with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The ribbon was cut by current 7th graders who were 4th graders in Mrs. Bromley’s class when the project first began. Kitsap County Commissioner Josh Brown and Paul Dorn of the Squamish Tribe assisted in the ribbon cutting. Photos of the celebration are available here.
