Flow Monitoring

Chico Creek at Taylor Rd.Stream flow – the amount of water moving in a stream -- can be disrupted by land development. Hard surfaces such as pavement can prevent rain from soaking into the ground (infiltrate). The lack of infiltration can result in two problems: either too much water or too little water. During rain storms, a large amount of fast moving water could damage habitat and cause flooding. In summer months, because of the lack of infiltration recharge, stream levels could be lower than normal – just when fish need pools to survive.

SSWM, in partnership with Kitsap Public Utility District and Silverdale Water District, is developing a long-term program to monitor and assess stream flows in selected streams.

Flow gaugeIn 2011 KPUD installed eight new or updated stream flow stations across the county. See the map and table below for more details about the locations and monitoring periods of the various stream sites.

Typically flow gauges are installed at road culverts. The photos show recent Kitsap Public Utility District installations at Chico Creek and Olalla Creek..

Please check back to find out more about this program.
