Drainage Improvements & Maintenance

Continuous improvements and maintenance of the County’s stormwater drainage facilities reduce the frequency and severity of flooding, improve water quality, increase fish passage, and provide habitat. Regular inspection and maintenance prevents trapped pollutants and debris from entering our waterways.

Construction Projects

The Surface and Stormwater Management's Capital Improvement Program evaluates large sections of the County for future drainage infrastructure improvements, constructs new conveyance projects, and retrofits existing portions of the storm drain system.

      Retrofit Projects
Retrofit projects exceed the scope of normal maintenance activities but are not large enough to warrant the use of hired consultants and contractors.  These small drainage system upgrades help reduce flooding, improve water quality, or enhance fish passage.

Drainage System Inspection & Maintenance

Surface and Stormwater Management staff annually inspects and maintains more than 9,900 storm drains, retention/detention facilities (storm ponds), and other publicly owned components of the storm drain system. Routine removal and proper disposal of accumulated sediment and pollutants prevents them from being discharged to our streams, lakes, and shorelines.

Commercial Properties
Commercial property owners are responsible for maintaining the storm drain system on their property. Surface and Stormwater Management staff annually inspects storm drain systems on commercial properties and offer maintenance recommendations where problems are noted.   More about maintaining your property’s drainage system

Maintenance Waste Processing
Sediment from storm drain cleaning can be disposed in accordance with state and local guidelines at Kitsap County’s Maintenance Waste Processing Facility. Waste liquids are processed through the Central Kitsap Wastewater Treatment Plant. Solids are typically brought to the Olympic View Transfer Station, depending on contamination levels.

To include your company on this list, submit a request here. Certified commercial vactor truck operators can use Kitsap County's Maintenance Waste Processing Facility for no disposal cost. To become certified, call 360-337-5777 or email Kitsap1@co.kitsap.wa.us
