Antifreeze Collection Program
What Do I Do With It?
As stated in the Kitsap County Comprehensive Solid
Waste Management Plan, antifreeze is the most frequently encountered
contaminant in oil brought in for recycling. The Solid Waste Division staff
worked for several years to design and implement a county-wide antifreeze
collection program. However, State and Federal regulations previously designated
antifreeze a dangerous waste. Antifreeze collection was available only at the
HHW Collection Facility. As a result of legislative
efforts, antifreeze has since been reclassified and is now treated the same as
used motor oil when it is recycled.
How does the program work?
In addition to the HHW Collection Facility, all drop-box facilities, the Poulsbo
Recycling Center, and the Olympic View Transfer Station accept used antifreeze.
The used antifreeze collection program is operated and maintained in conjunction
with the used motor oil collection program. All paperwork, training, spill kits,
clean-up supplies are similar to those for the used motor oil collection
program. More information is available in the
Solid Waste Annual Report
for 2007.
Where can I
recycle my used antifreeze?
All drop-boxes have a 10-gallon limit. The HHW
Collection Facility does not have a limit, however, if the antifreeze is
in anything larger than a 10-gallon container, call ahead to arrange a
drop-off time. There is no charge for residential customers at the drop-box
facilities or HHW Collection Facility. The only facility to accept
contaminated antifreeze is the HHW Collection Facility.
Check all the local collection spots from the recycle
database.
Businesses must contact the HHW Collection Facility to schedule an appointment
during the SQG Collection. If
you have any questions or comments about antifreeze collection, please contact:
