Adopt-A-Road Program
Safety First
Safety is the number one priority during each Adopt-A-Road
cleanup. The County provides safety orientations and equipment, like
safety vests, gloves, long handled grabbers, etc. Groups are
encouraged to pick up one side of the road at a time, facing oncoming
traffic and keep the number of volunteers to no more than 10 per mile of
roadway.
Research indicates that litter bugs tend to be young (16-35), single, and
male. A great way to prevent younger people from developing a littering
habit is to involve them in a litter cleanup activity. However, safety
concerns limit the age for involvement in the Adopt-A-Road program to 15 and
older.
-
Over 18: Eligible to apply for normal road clean up and may
serve as a supervisor for younger people.
-
15 – 17: Must apply with an adult. Written parental consent
is required. While on the road, one adult must supervise every eight youth
volunteers.
When choosing a road to adopt, your primary consideration should be safety for yourself and your group. Some factors to consider are
speed of traffic and volume, width of
road shoulder, location of guardrails and steep slopes. We ask that you
select three roads you would like to adopt. Roads are assigned on a
first-come, first-served basis after a safety review. We may suggest safer
locations near your choices. We will provide a brief safety
orientation or training materials to make certain you are aware of risks and
responsibilities assumed by Adopt-A-Road volunteers.
