Adopt-A-Road Program

From 1996 through 2007, the County litter crews collected nearly 400 tons of litter from County roads.  Your community needs your help!

Look no farther than a street or road near your home or business.  Participating in the Adopt-A-Road program is a way to do something positive in your own neighborhood.

This program creates a partnership of citizens, local businesses, community service groups and organizations, and the local government to promote civic pride and preserve our clean environment by eliminating and reducing the amount of roadside litter.

The Adopt-A-Road program is aimed at businesses, organizations, and service clubs as well as individuals out on their usual walks.  If you or your group are able to participate, fill out the on-line application after you have read all the information and we will contact you.

LITTER FACTS

  • The Kitsap County Sheriff's Inmate Crew cleaned up 34 tons of litter from 1,272 road miles in 2007. Litter was collected at least twice during the year from 27 roads in north Kitsap, 29 roads in central Kitsap, and 51 roads in south Kitsap.

The Department of Ecology reports:

  • 65 tons of cigarette butts are littered each year on interstates, state routes and County roads.  That is 260,000,000 cigarette butts - enough to fill approximately 8600 litterbags!

  • More than a quarter of a million pounds, or 7,500 cubic yards of plastic beverage containers are littered on interstates, state routes and County roads each year.

  • While almost four million pounds of glass beverage containers are littered each year, they only represent 5,000 cubic yards.

  • 884 tones of tires and tire scraps, representing 88,400 passenger car tires, are littered each year in the sites included in the study.

  • Approximately 535 tons of metal and plastic automotive parts are littered each year in the types of sites included in the study - 154 tons (28 percent) of which were found in state and County parks and public recreations areas.

PLANNING A CLEANUP EVENT

Choose a section of roadway at least 1 mile in length, this equals 2 roadway miles when picking up both sides.  Plan clean up events at least annually.  Most often these events occur twice annually, once in the fall and once in the spring.  Plan your clean up activity well enough ahead of time to coordinate the pick up of bags and safety equipment from one of these locations:

Public Works Annex (Port of Bremerton Industrial Park)
Poulsbo Recycle Center
Hansville Drop Box Facility
